Kapi‘olani Community Colleges received $400,000 in emergency federal funds through a Title III ANNH Part A supplement to provide support services to Kapi‘olani students affected by the Maui Wildfires. This supplemental award will advance the Kūloa‘a – Advancing Indigenous Innovators project goals through two supplemental activities.

Supplemental Activity #1: Strengthen the basic needs and mental health support to address the immediate need to support the Kapi‘olani Community College students affected by the Maui Wildfire disaster. We propose a basic needs resource coordinator and direct case management support to connect Maui students with basic needs, mental health, and academic support resources to aid in recovering and maintaining momentum toward certificate and degree attainment and transfer. (Supports Project Activity #1)

Supplemental Activity #2: Conduct a comprehensive assessment of Title III ANNH-funded projects through an analysis of impacts on students by this and other Title III grants (e.g. impact on NH students, impact on all students and faculty to become more fluent in NH worldviews/values, etc.) (Activity #2) With data-driven insights and feedback from Title III ANNH stakeholders, leverage technology to improve coordination and communication among Title III grants (e.g. grant summit, video dissemination of grant success) (Activity #2) Increase Native Hawaiian students’ awareness and access to student support services to boost the efficacy of ANNH-funded and institutionalized Native Hawaiian student support service delivery (Activities #1 & 2)

Kapi‘olani will recruit additional staffing positions to support these emergency relief activities with additional Title III funding.

Congratulations to Dr. Michaelyn Nākoa Hall, interim executive director for strategy, Dr. Loke Kenolio, vice chancellor for student affairs, and Li-Anne Delavega, undergraduate research experiences coordinator, for their successful application to the Title III ANNH Part A supplemental funding competition.
